Seeing the Forest Despite the Trees: Large Scale Spatial-Temporal Decision Making

چکیده
In conclusion, I will reiterate that the primary purpose of the ‘non-pine’ partition is to maintain options to support the currently projected mid-term harvest level. In the short term, the implementation of this capped partition should allow for licensees to harvest in and sustain operations from Douglas-fir-, spruceand balsam-leading stands during times when pine may not be economically viable, with the proviso that at the end of the five-year period the total amount of five times 1.7 million = 8.5 million cubic metres of harvested, Douglas-fir, spruce and balsam is not exceeded; this provides for continuation of the harvest at close to recent levels. To any extent that this were to be exceeded, the mid-term level would be compromised. Therefore, if ongoing monitoring shows a consistent trend toward over-reaching this limit, I may revisit this determination earlier than required by statute, to specify a new level of harvest in the ‘non-pine’ partition, consistent with achieving the mid-term level.

The regeneration is one of the most important phenomena in forest ecosystems and the most important factor of development and sustainability of forests. Assessment of the regeneration is one of the best criteria for monitoring forest function stability. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial variability of regeneration diversity and its relationship with tree species diversity in ...
متن کاملSeeing the forest through the trees: Recovering large-scale carbon flux biases in the midst of small-scale variability
[1] This paper investigates the effect of fine-scale spatial variability in carbon fluxes upon regional carbon flux inversion estimates in North America using simulated data from 1 May through 31 August 2004 and a hypothetical sparse network of eight towers in North America. A suite of random smooth regional carbon flux patterns are created and then obscured with random fine-scale spatial flux ...

Assessment of forest structure and their spatial patterns are essential for managing and evaluation of forest ecosystems. This study was conducted at the Zagros forests in Kermanshah to evaluate the forest structural characteristics and their spatial distribution. Data was collected from 25 plots (400 m2) in a 100 m × 100 m systematic sampling grid. The spacing between plots was 50 m. In each p...

As the name implies, Multi Criteria Decision Making Methods (MCDMs) is a decision making tool that capable the selection of the most preferred choice in a context where several criteria apply simultaneously. Primary purpose of this study is to examine the status of Multi Criteria Decision Making Methods (MCDMs) in forest management. The study also aims to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses ...
